20th SAAHJ Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala

Grand Hyatt San Antonio

Saturday August 11th 2018 6:00 pm –  9:00 pm

The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists (SAAHJ), is making a difference in the promotion of diversity and inclusion in today’s newsrooms and communications offices – a necessity in today’s world. Our mission of promoting the diversity of newsrooms and communications industries, so they better reflect the communities they serve, is what excites us as we prepare for our 20th Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala – we want to build the next generation of industry leaders while we provide support to our news and communications industries here in San Antonio.

This year we are honored that Elaine Ayala, a 38 year news veteran will be celebrated for her work in the community and will be presented with the 2018 Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism.

American Indians of Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions will also be awarded that evening with the honor of the Community Service Award for their work of preservation and protection of the culture and traditions of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation and other indigenous people of the Spanish colonial missions in south Texas and northern Mexico.

We’re also very excited to announce our 2018 Corazon De Oro Award Recipient - Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto of San Juan, Puerto Rico, will keynote and accept accept SAAHJ’s Corazon de Oro Award, an honor given to national figures who have made significant achievements in their chosen fields while making a positive impact on the Latino community, or contributing positively on the U.S. Latino experience. Cruz, who rose to national attention for her role in alleviating the humanitarian crisis created after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico last year, has served as a relentless voice for her people and a fierce critic of the response to the devastation.

For the fourth consecutive year SAAHJ will present scholarship awards totaling up to $40,000; our scholarship program is a tangible way that SAAHJ supports the growth of diversity in our news and communications offices. To date SAAHJ has awarded more than $500,000 – a feat only accomplished with our committed network of supporters and sponsors. We hope that you will consider becoming one! Attached you will find more information on this year’s gala, as well as information about sponsorship for the event. Feel free to reach out to me for any questions or concerns.

On behalf of the SAAHJ Board of Directors, we thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to a fun filled evening and hope you can be part of this momentous occasion.
